I often hear Americans say, "What's new with you?" It does not mean the same as, "How are you." It means, "Is there anything new in your life (since we last spoke.)" It is something that is usually asked after inquiring about a person's general wellbeing--especially if the person's answer wasn't very informative. It is an invitation to share whatever is on your mind--news or gossip.
