    DHA y cáncer de próstata

Se ha publicado un estudio que muestra que el DHA inhibe el desarrollo del cáncer de próstata:

    Bianchini F, Giannoni E, Serni S, Chiarugi P, Calorini L.
22 : 6n-3 DHA inhibits differentiation of prostate fibroblasts into myofibroblasts and tumorigenesis.
    Br J Nutr. 2012 Dec;108(12):2129-37. doi: 10.1017/S0007114512000359.

Los resultados de dicho estudio contrastan con otro, publicado anteriormente, en el que se indicaba que las personas con más DHA tienen más posibilidades de sufrir cáncer de próstata:

Brasky TM, Till C, White E, Neuhouser ML, Song X, Goodman P, Thompson IM, King IB, Albanes D, Kristal AR

    I'm skeptical...
    it might be prudent...

"In summary, I’m skeptical that DHA causes prostate cancer, but if you are at high risk, it might be prudent to stick to the lower end of the daily recommendations until more is known."

Aquí otro estudio que discute los estudios contradictorios:

Blood Level Omega-3 Fatty Acids as Risk Determinant Molecular Biomarker for Prostate Cancer, March 2013

    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3621295/

    Algunas partes interesantes:

"Environmental factors and sources of fish oil have also been reported to contribute to prostate cancer development. Two studies have reported that environmental toxins such as polychlorinated biphenyls or methylmercury compounds, which are found in contaminated marine fish, when consumed in the diet, can disrupt androgen and estrogen balance that may be associated with prostate cancer development [131, 132]. "

"The studies included in the present analysis were carried out in western countries, where diets are generally not healthy; thus the results extracted can only be generally applied to the western population"

    "Conclusion

In conclusion, this meta-analysis provided evidence that elevated blood levels of DPA are associated with decreased risk of developing prostate cancer. Elevated blood levels of EPA and DHA in combination are associated with increased risk of high-grade prostate tumor. Cautious interpretation of these results must be done, since prostate carcinogenesis is multifactorial, and the body's metabolism of n-3 PUFA is complex. "

    Y otro estudio:

"The Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acid DHA Induces Simultaneous Apoptosis and Autophagy via Mitochondrial ROS-Mediated Akt-mTOR Signaling in Prostate Cancer Cells Expressing Mutant p53" June 2013

    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3691929/

"In summary, the present study shows that the ω3-PUFA DHA simultaneously induces autophagy and apoptosis in p53-mutant PC3 and DU145 cells by triggering mitochondrial ROS generation and that inhibition of Akt-mTOR signaling is involved in this process (Figure 5). These findings suggest that DHA may be beneficial to patients with p53-mutant prostate cancer and provide a strong rationale for the use of DHA in the treatment of prostate cancer."
