Scott Jurek is a vegan ultra-marathon runner who last year won - and set a new record for - the Badwater Ultramarathon. This is a treacherous 135 mile race from Death Valley, California, to the slopes of Mt. Whitney with an elevation gain of 13,000 feet and temperatures pushing 120 degrees fahrenheit. Fueled along the way by an all vegan diet of soy protein drinks and potato and rice balls, he normally eats a high-protein vegan diet with lots of tofu, tempeh, and whole grains, nuts and seeds. As a sometimes 5K runner myself, I am in utter awe and more than a little inspired by this man!

    http://vegetarian.about.com/b/2006/0...marathoner.htm

(...) On his own journey towards optimal health, Scott began transitioning to a vegetarian whole foods diet in 1997, while competing in several ultra trail races per year. In 1999, he adopted a vegan diet out of further health and environmental concerns. Scott continues to fuel his body on a completely vegan diet while competing in 10-12 ultramarathons per year in addition to his rigorous training schedule. All seven of his consecutive wins at the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run were performed on vegan fuel.

    Vegan Marathon Runner

-You are being sponsored by Chicago Soy Dairy at Chicago (those marshmallows and cookie dough ice cream look incredible!). How did that come about?

First off, the ice cream and marshmallows ARE incredible. All bias aside, I really think both product are the best out there. Specifically I'm sponsored by Vegan Dandies Marshmallows which is Chicago Soy Dairy's newest product. The guys who run CSD used to live by me and we ran with the same musical subculture comprised of music and politics. We stayed in touch for a bit as they are all athletes and take part in adventure racing and other sorts of events, so after discussing my running performances I posed the idea of sponsorship to them and they were all about it. We are currently working on getting team singlets printed. I know it's a bit odd, a distance runner being sponsored by a marshmallow of all things, but there is a deeper reasoning behind the relationship, wherein we both prove the possibility of veganism without compromise.

¡Vaya!

In the article on the Freerider ascent you mentioned yoga twice. Practising yoga seems to be very important for you and Dean...

I started learning yoga about two years ago. At about the same time, I became a vegan (don't eat any animal products, or refined sugar). Physically and spiritually, these two practices have changed my life, and brought my climbing and running to another level.

    Peter Brocks

ANDREW DENTON: How can you look 28 and be 60?

PETER BROCK: I, I must say that when you do reach 60, you don't mind an accolade coming your way, so thank you very much.

ANDREW DENTON: No, there's clearly a deal with the Devil. I'm sorry, you're...you don't have an ounce of flab on you, you barely have a crease in your face. Your hair is a subtle grey, I'll give you that.

PETER BROCK: (Laughs) You mustn't be looking into the same mirror I'm looking into but anyway. No, look, I do feel pretty good. I guess I started off...maybe 20 years ago, watching what I ate and doing a bit of exercise and things like that.

ANDREW DENTON: But, correct me if I'm wrong, vegans won't eat anything that's an animal product?

PETER BROCK: But I do. So I'm not totally vegan. I eat eggs and stuff like that. I eat eggs. I'm sorry out there, all you vegans...

ANDREW DENTON: God, you're gonna get so much mail now.

PETER BROCK: So I'm not strictly vegan but I'm pretty close to it.

ANDREW DENTON: OK, 'cause, you know, my father always theorised that tofu actually comes from toe jam.

PETER BROCK: Yeah. And, do you know, I'm saying your father was pretty close to the mark.

    ANDREW DENTON: Is that right?

PETER BROCK: It's pretty crook stuff, I can tell you.

ANDREW DENTON: See, I respect the fact you can eat a vegan diet because I'm, you know, I'm a brains and veins man. Yeah. Yeah, I like...yeah, yeah. That's, I like, you know.

PETER BROCK: Well, I used to be.

ANDREW DENTON: I'm the top of the food chain. I've worked hard to eat things smaller than me.

PETER BROCK: (Laughs) Look, I'm a...I guess you could say that that was a gradual process. That I didn't actually just overnight say, "I'm going to become a vegie burger and I'm going to stop eating meat," and stuff like that. It was like getting off red meat and getting off, you know, I guess, poultry and fish and stuff like that. And around about 15 years ago, I thought, "This is not really suiting me." So I just went onto a vegie-type diet. Then I cut out dairy, so that's made the difference.
